Zimbabwe

I have only been to Zimbabwe for one day. I had been working in Zambia for a couple of weeks, then went to Victoria Falls for the weekend (also see my Zambia page).

Victoria Falls

Zambezi River Bridge

On Sunday afternoon, I walked across the Zambezi River Bridge into Zimbabwe and explored the falls from this side.

There was a path near the water along which I walked. It was awesome but I got absolutely drenched - it was like being in a shower.

The views at sunrise and sunset were spectacular.

Harare

After leaving the falls, I meandered to the airport. In fact, airport was far too grand a word for the tin hut in which we awaited our plane. The flight to Harare was uneventful, as was my brief foray into the office to sort out a minor computer problem.

Zimbabwe seemed very civilised after Zambia and felt much safer (this was in the mid-eighties). I was very sad to see subsequent news reports about Mugabe's annexation of farms, and atrocities carried out with his complicit approval. From being a rich country producing more than enough food for the population, it is now much poorer and a net importer of food.
