Malaysia

Malaysia is a divergent and multi-cultural community, with different ethnic groups co-mingling in uneasy harmony.

Kuala Lumpur

I was working in Kuala Lumpur and spent many happy hours wandering round Chinatown , which I found interesting. I sampled many restaurants eating Chinese and Malay food.

There were also some Hindu temples, which were magnificent. There was much ornate detail on the statues.

You always have to carry a jacket in Kuala Lumpur, but not for outside, where the sultry heat beats down on you. Instead, you need to put it on when you go inside, where the air-conditioning is turned up ridiculously high. I wrote a poem celebrating favourite restaurants round the world I have visited and one called carved carrots about a meal in Malaysia.

monsoon

But although it's always warm, it is not always dry. In the wet season, the rain is predictable in its regularity and unbelievably strong. It comes down like a solid sheet and then stops suddenly. Afterwards, the air seems so clear, colours vivid, and everywhere seems alive and vibrant.

It is ironic that the roof of the main railway station had to be built to withstand two feet of snow to meet British building regulations - and I very much doubt that KL has ever experienced snow.
