www.theblisspages.com - how I got back into board gamesIn my twenties, I used to play board games frequently meeting up with groups of friends for marathon sessions. I remember one Monopoly game played on four boards from different countries. But Monopoly, though well-known, was by no means the best game around. Cosmic Encounter was very popular, along with The Awful Green Things from Outer Space! We also played as a family.
...but then, I hardly played games (except at Christmas) for several decades.
One day I opened the cupboard to get out one of my games, and found it bare. My wife had taken it upon herself to give them all to a charity shop. I was furious, especially as most of them were out-of-print and difficult to obtain.
I decided to buy them again, so did some research on the Internet and elsewhere.
I bought some games from Gamesale as they are particularly good for second-hand games. I found their prices competitive and delivery was quick.
Another source I used is MNG, who sell second-hand games by mail-order. This used to be run by Eamon Bloomfield, but has now been taken over by Andy Merritt. Email Andy at andy.merritt@ntlworld.com for details and lists.
Whilst sitting on the train, I got talking to someone reading Counter magazine, and by the time I'd managed to find most of the games that had been given away, there were enough games players locally to start playing regularly, and we still meet most weeks.
The last game I was looking for was Sopwith, a game of plane-to-plane combat in World War One. I found a copy at Essen in 2002 - one moreover, which had never been played. I last played it with my mother and sister in the eighties and look forward to making its reaquaintance soon!
