www.theblisspages.com - pasteboard and plastic IXThe first Pasteboard and Plastic event in Saltdean was in November 2005. This was the ninth event, in July 2009, and as always, it was a fun day. See this index of all Pasteboard and Plastic events.
My car was in the garage, so I brought the minimum of games today – barely one bagful! Thanks, Joseph, for the lift there at 09:30, and Tony for the return journey at midnight, after a very full day's gaming.
I bought Klondike, Speed Circuit, Smallworld, and Squint, and sold Vinci.
A short, two-player game kicked off the day. This card-driven version of Puerto Rico is excellent, and I didn't begrudge Richard's narrow victory. I nearly bought this, but just resisted.
players: Richard, Mike
I love this huge game, but don't get to play it very often. We used the 10th anniversary track, and raced for two laps with two cars each, using the optional slipstreaming rules. I love the different dice for each gear, with the difficult decisions they entail – a safe but slow fifth gear, or all out in sixth, with the possibility of a huge overshoot if you roll a 30.
players: Sandy, Miguel, Mike
The last time I played this was at Pasteboard and Plastic VIII, and it was a very long game. Today's was better paced and an exciting Neolithic romp. I didn't collect enough cards, with the essential multiplier effects, but had a great time.
players: Helen, Dick, Mike, Jim
I bought this game primarily for my children, but it would make a great late-night filler, especially after a few drinks. Players bet on the panning skills of a prospector with a large panning dish and suspiciously round rocks ... and, of course, there's a racoon!
players: Jim, Dick, Matt, Mike
This sounded as if it would be light and whimsical, but was in fact a bit of a brain burner. It was worthy, but not one I'd want to play again.
players and scores: Jim (43), Dick (31), Matt (44), Mike (32), Mark (16)
The second race game of my day, and one I have long wanted to play. We were going to race two laps, but the consensus was to finish after the first lap. It was a bit fiddly. I enjoyed it, but still prefer Formula De.
players: Tim, Jim, Dick, Mike
Fische Fluppen Frikadellen by Friedemann Friese is a game I love, but it was just too late, and I couldn't get into it (we played Set C). I was struggling from the beginning to the end. Every time I bought something, the bottom fell out of the market. I still look forward to playing it at Pasteboard and Plastic X, but not as the last game.
players: Tim, Jim, Dick, Mike
It was great to meet old and new friends, especially everyone from Board Game Club, and I look forwards to November. Thanks again, Dick, for organising everything.
