halloween 2008

pumpkin I try to mark all holidays – see Diwali – and All Hallows Eve is no exception. I'd originally planned to take the children to Tulley's farm, but when I found it would cost nearly seventy pounds, decided on a simpler approach. Tesco was discounting all its Halloween gear, so I bought a wig, cape, false hands, pumpkin carving tools and sundry skeletons. I started preparing a distinctly non-traditional Peking Duck.

Suddenly, we heard a noise from upstairs, but we were all in the lounge. Discounting ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties, I investigated, but found nothing. Soon afterwards, I heard an even larger crash and raced upstairs again, this time to find smashed tiles all over the bathroom floor. Either I have a poltergeist, or, more likely, they'd just got bored and fallen off the wall. After removing other loose tiles, I now have nineteen twenty-six tiles to replace, if I can find the right size. Update: The old tiles were six inches and the replacements are slightly smaller at 148 mm. I've put them up, and am grouting them.

After putting up decorations and lighting candles, we played some traditional games like apple-bobbing, ate some apple-strudel and watched one of my favourite films – The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Jack Skellington and the delectable Sally – to round off the day.
