www.theblisspages.com - national poetry dayIt was National Poetry Day on 9 October, and I enjoyed a couple of events.
At work there was a lunchtime poetry reading by Gillian Clarke, who is the National Poet of Wales, which I attended. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading, particularly Gillian's works about her family and the nearly-seen otter. The forty minutes seemed to pass in a flash.
In the evening, I went to the Redroaster Coffee House in 1d St James’s St Brighton BN2 1RE from 20:30 for a poetry event. It cost five pounds. The Coffee House didn't serve food, but the coffee was good. It started with an open mic, and I was the first up.
I started with network woes, then regaled the audience with view from the balcony, I wonder and finished off with my oh-so-modest ecosystem. The audience clapped and laughed in the right places and I felt I hadn't outstayed my welcome. Some of the other open mic'ers were very good - I particularly liked the recipe for wormburgers.
There were a couple of slots for established and published poets, and I enjoyed hearing Jay Bernard and Joe Duggan. There were also a few people interesting in coming along to poets cornered, and it was good to see Bernadette Cremin again. Overall, an enjoyable and uplifting evening.
