in cahoots October 2008

I was very tempted to stay at home tonight and watch a film, but I was so glad I made the effort to get out. The weather was absolutely foul, and as I drove I thought I was absolutely mad. Passing through Ditchling, I had to show down to 15 mph through flooded roads, but eventually I reached the Portland Rock Bar in Hove, just before the first band started. I was there to see In Cahoots, but was astonished at the calibre of bands playing, especially as it only cost three pounds to get in.

Broadway Danny Rose

Broadway Danny Rose Jack Ryder from Broadway Danny Rose Jack Ryder from Broadway Danny Rose and Theseus Broadway Danny Rose is a trio comprising Joe Bell, Jack Ryder and Hannah Abbo. Hannah played a variety of instruments, including a keyboard instrument she blew into, one-note xylophones and the keyboard.

They set the note for the evening. See (and hear) more at myspace.com/broadwaydannyroseband.

The LayLanas

The LayLanas Lana McDee from The LayLanas The LayLanas are a Brighton-based country-pop-folk band, and I was blown away by their quality.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were signed soon. See (and hear) more at myspace.com/thelaylanas.

The Sinod

The Sinod The Sinod comprised The seus, Si mon, and Nodd, and they were great.

They didn't take themselves too seriously, and their speciality seemed to be substance abuse, with songs such as Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette), Cigarettes and Whiskey and Wild Wild Women and the like dominating their set.

In Cahoots

In Cahoots After an interval, during which I chatted to friends old and new, it was time for the headliners, In Cahoots.

I have seen them at least four times before, but am still always surprised at just how good they are. I have their CD, "Work for Idle Hands", and listened to it on my way to Hove for the concert.

I particularly like September Song, but is difficult to single out one favourite song amidst so many great ones. See (and hear) more at myspace.com/incahootsuk

As I was driving, I had to stick to lime and soda, but to be honest, the Portland Rock Bar is known for its music, not the quality of its wines, with Chenet being the peak of its ambitions. I do wish they'd get something a bit more drinkable!

The concert finished at about quarter past midnight, but the night was still young...
