holiday: august 2008

I have been on leave since the August Bank Holiday with my children.

The down side was that I missed my regular poetry, yoga and salsa sessions, but this remained an interesting, varied and eventful week.

It was great to have eight days with the kids, and great to hand them back to my ex on Sunday, but within a couple of hours, the house felt empty and much too quiet.

The week had its ups and downs. The children loved the visit to Butlins at Bognor Regis: we spent hours in the pool, with various flumes and a rollercoaster raft ride right round the pool, though it was a shame that the waves were not working. We then went go-karting and on a few rides before returning home.

We watched more than a few films, and the children spent (too) much time on The Sims 2, the Playstation 2 and Wii Fit. We had a blackberry-picking competition in my back garden, with over one kilo picked in twenty minutes – delicious after being washed and cooked. My children also helped with household chores, emptying the bins, hoovering and washing up, so the house didn't look too bad after their visit.

I took the children shopping to Crawley during the week. I bought some running shoes – part of my current fitness 'kick' – and whilst in the shoe shop, got talking to an attractive, but harassed mother. She was surrounded by carrier bags and looked like she had had enough, when suddenly one of her brood copiously vomited all over her dress. It was the last straw, and I knew just what she was feeling. There was nothing I could do to help, so discretely withdrew. If you are reading this, I am so sorry you had such an appalling end to your shopping trip and hope your journey home wasn't as bad as I suspect it was...

flying a kite Back in the fresh air, we flew the kites a few times, and the wind on Devil's Dyke was exhilarating, and yes, I have tried out the running shoes.

On Friday, we had to go to the funeral of my aunt Joyce. The children looked smart and were very well-behaved, but the journey to Worthing was appalling and we were late. It transpired that an eighty-two year-old cyclist had been knocked of her bike by a seven-ton lorry on the A27. I hope she is recovering – it puts delays into their correct perspective. At the wake, we also heard that Barney, a much-loved Labrador owned by my cousin Janet, had been bitten by an adder at Devil's Dyke, and had unfortunately died.

On Saturday, I took my son, mother and uncle to Shoreham air show. I've never been before, but enjoyed it. Read more at my Shoreham air show report.
