The first Pasteboard and Plastic event in Saltdean was in November 2005. This is the sixth event, in July 2008, and as always it was a fun day. See this geeklist on BoardGameGeek.
I'd like to thank Dick, an irregular at our gaming group, for organising it so well. We had an attendance of around thirty this time, and the event raised about £80 for the local scout group.
I wanted to play some of the unplayed games in my collection and took a large bag with me, as well as one game to sell. In the event, I only played two of the games I took, and sold none. Ironically, the game that didn't sell was called Sold!. However I bought Agricola, For Sale, Clans, Niagara, Fishy, Scream Machine and Mwahahaha! (but see below). I've wanted to play this game ever since Richard brought it along to the Burgess Hill boardgamer's group.
It looked interesting, and I was even keener after reading a review in Counter.
It is all about mining in Cornwall. The price of tin and copper fluctuates, but an added complication is the water seepage whenever you extract either. You bid for mines, but if you overbid, you'll run out of money for mining, and at the end of each round, after selling your ore, you buy victory points. To add to the fun, everything you do – including selling pasties - uses action points, and the player with least points moves.
Well, how did it stack up? I enjoyed it, and not just because I won (on a tie-break).
players: Luke, Debs, Garry, Mike
playing time: 2 hours 45 minutes
I bought this at Essen in 2001, but have never before played it. It looked complex and garnered some bad reviews when it came out. I quite enjoyed it, after a slow start, and think it would play faster in subsequent games. Others claimed it 'dragged a lot'.
I loved the theme, which is feeding pigeons in Venice. You are going for majorities in several districts, but you must also ensure you put some pigeons in Piazza San Marco to breed.
We only played to forty points instead of fifty as it was our first game, but I think the extra ten points would have only added one extra round to the game.
players: Debs, Garry Ian, Mike
playing time: 2 hours
My group has played this racing game before but I hadn't, so was glad to have a chance. Designed by Reiner Knizia, the game is card-driven and you try to get your cars ahead as the cards run out and the race ends. It played quickly and enjoyably.
players: Tom, Jim, Tim, Mike
playing time: 30 minutes
I loved the theme of this game, with mad scientists cackling as they threaten the world with doomsday weapons, surrounded by loyal henchmen, or minions. I couldn't resist buying it, and was pleased to have the chance of a game as Tom had also bought a copy. The heft factor was exceptional for a game that cost only £16, with many cards, doomsday weapons, mad scientists, and a forty page rulebook, which brought me down to earth with a bump.
The game features complex resource-gathering and Risk-style combat. We had to break off part-way through, as it was time for Werewolf, but the game ended quite quickly thereafter.
I soon realised that this was not going to get many plays with my group, but Keith loved it, so bought my unplayed copy.
players: Tom, Tim, Keith, Mike
playing time: 3 hours 45 minutes
The traditional end to a Pasteboard and Plastic event, this was as much fun as previous games. The werewolves seemed to gain the upper paw most of the time, aided by some random villagers (aka Tom!).
I played a victorious werewolf in the first game, and a hapless villager in the second, before returning to finish off Mwahahaha! See Pasteboard and Plastic V's Werewolf.
players: Dick, Dave, Keith, Mike, Phil, Miguel, Luke, Jim, Glynn, Debs, Gary, Tom, Al
playing time: 1 hour
I plan to attend Pastboard and Plastic VII, which is a week or two after Essen 2008.
