Pasteboard and Plastic V

Links on this page: Sopwith : Imperial : Rails of Europe : Dungeonville : Werewolf

The first Pasteboard and Plastic event in Saltdean was in November 2005. This is the fifth event, in March 2008, and as always it was a fun day. See this geeklist on BoardGameGeek.

I'd like to thank Dick, a regular at our gaming group, for organising it so well. We had an attendance of around thirty this time, and the event raised about £60 for the local scout group.

I wanted to play some of my favourite games and took a large bag with me, as well as five to sell. In the event, I only played one of the games I took, and sold none – though I gave away a copy of Mid-Life Crisis. However I bought five, Rails of Europe, Dungeonville, Conquest of the Fallen Lands and Freya's Folly. You might also like to look at my board games pages.

If you have any comments, or have found any errors or omissions, please drop me an email.

Sopwith

I've owned this game twice (See how I got back into board games), but not played it for twenty years, so was delighted to make its reacquaintance.

We all took off and headed towards the centre of the board, whereupon a vicious dogfight ensued. I had time to reflect on my mistakes as my little Fokker spiralled towards the ground. Then Miguel and Tim duelled to the death – well, Jim's death, though Miguel's plane had only one damage marker in hand. It was a tight and enjoyable game.

Imperial

This is another of the ‘Roundel' series of games, which includes gems such as Antike, and Hamburgum. They were all designed by Mac Gerdts. I enjoyed this game, but felt slightly uneasy as a sleazy financier preparing for war!

players: Martin, Alasdair, Ron, and Mike

Rails of Europe

This is an expansion for Railroad Tycoon, but amusingly, Eagle Games obviously no longer have the rights to the name, as this is touted as an expansion to their railroad game.

The map is slightly smaller, and now fits on my petite dining table. The game is tighter and feels quite different from the original. As always, I really enjoyed the game, even though I was unable to keep up with Richard's excellent play – all that Age of Steam playing-time wasn't wasted!

players: Richard, Adrian, Howard, Dave, and Mike

playing time: 2 hours

Dungeonville

I couldn't resist the theming of this game, trying to kill of the other players' characters, but was relieved to see that it played well. Production values could have been higher, and I am tempted to produce a board for the game, but in the end it's gameplay that matters, and I thought this game worked.

players: Peter, Richard, Gary, and Mike

playing time: 30 minutes

Werewolf

I had to leave at 19:00 so didn't have time for the traditional game of Werewolf, which I gathered was fun. See Pasteboard and Plastic V's Werewolf.

I plan to attend Pasteboard and Plastic VI (or is it 6?) on 12 July 2008.
