a blur of red

A blur of red goes past again
Triumphant Ferrari,
It’s just the same
As last time, only one in the frame
The prancing horse is just not playing the game

The FIA tinkers with the rules enforced
No engine change,
Less downforce
But whatever they try, whatever the source
Schumi always seems to rule the course

With qualifying, they mess around
With two sessions
They confound
No-one understands, groans resound
Yet again, his luck abounds

Money talks, and physics listens
Ten times the budget
The red car glistens
Minardi just manage to get on the grid
But once again, adieu to title bid

Good cars and good drivers abound
Some expire swiftly, some hang around
But the chequered flag
Beckons only to one
On the podium Michael does his trademark bound

2004 would be a bumper year
But already the championship is almost dead
The winner is nearly announced...
...And ... he's wearing red

I've been watching for forty years
The triumphs and tragedies
The thanks and the fears
Stadiums resounding with groans and cheers
Pundits and critics, visionaries and seers

But all is not black
Exciting times will be back
Overtaking manoeuvres out on the track
Wheel-to-wheel action between equals no lack
But only once Shumi's been given the sack

All this will pass, once he's out on his arse
More winning drivers, more winning cars,
Unpredictable racing - passing into folklore
Formula One can get exciting once more
With no blur of red hogging the score.
